Tai Chi & Qigong in the outdoors

As the weather is getting better, people are starting to go outside more.  Have you done any Tai Chi and Qigong outside before?  If you've haven't, it's a lot of fun.

We don't all have adequate space at home, so parks and other public spaces are perfect.

Before you head out, do be mindful the following points.

  • Please be mindful of other park users.

  • If you practice with Tai Chi swords* or other weapons, please only use wooden versions.

  • Please keep your swords and equipment is a suitable bag.

  • Bring your martial arts insurance certificate or licence.

  • Dress appropriately for the weather and wear suitable shoes.

  • Sunscreen and insect repellent for those sunny days.

  • Other members of the public also have the right to enjoy parks too.

  • Beware of dangers such as dogs and suspicious behaviour.

*There has been incidents in the past where there have been misunderstandings and have involved the police. Due to the fear of knife crimes and assaults involving samurai swords, please be mindful of what you are doing. It is not worth causing alarm and getting arrested. Please read up on the law in your respective country. In my native Hong Kong, it is acceptable to train with metal swords in parks, but the same is not allowed in the United Kingdom. It is not the sword, but the person who wields it that is the problem. Genuine martial artists should not be tarred with the same brush as thugs. The public and the politicians don't understand the difference. It does not help when celebrities get involved in what they don't understand. This all comes down to education. All it takes is one incident to ruin it for the rest of us.

When is the best time to train?

There isn't really a best time, but mornings are ideal, as you should still feel fresh. It all comes down to how much time have you got. It is is too cold, too hot, too wet or too extreme, then please exercise common sense.

Thank you for reading.
