The Hong Kong Connection


Did you know connection between Hong Kong and Royal Tunbridge Wells? The answer isn't me. Hollywood Road Park was once called Possession Point, where Sir James John Gordon Bremer, a Royal Navy officer hoisted the Union flag. Back then the shoreline was just at the end of the park. When you see how far the shoreline has moved now, you can see how much land was reclaimed over past 150 years. It would take a good 30 minutes to get down to the current waterfront. It is not just the distance, but also negotiation the traffic. Hollywood Park is on the south side of Hollywood Road. Which in turn is part of the Soho neighbourhood. This area is one that has been continuously settled since the earliest days as a British Colony. The streets are laced with history and well worth visiting if you have time. Bremer had successful career in the Royal Navy and was active in the Far East. After a long career as naval commander and diplomat, Bremner retired in the spare town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. The town that would be his home for the rest of this life. His name doesn't appear to have been mentioned anywhere. Only those who have been awarded a Victoria Cross are generally recognised. However, I personally feel that the man who negotiated on behalf of Great Britain and made history should be remembered. Back then Britain only got Hong Kong Island and a portion of the Kowloon Peninsula. It was the start of interesting times and it is a legacy that lasts to this day.
